Question OK, Shannon. You Can Explain Now, Please.

Looks like all the changes are in and there is some new stuff. I'm sure there are others besides me who have no idea what those new icons at the bottom left of the messages are about. Others are are also like me and won't "click" them just to see what they'll do (have "clicked" icons before and been very surprised at what happened:eek. PLEASE explain the following for those of us who tend to be a bit "computer challenged":

"Digg This Post"
"Add Post To del.icio.us"
"Bookmark Post In Technrati" (talk about your "techno-speak":confused
"Furl This Post" (I know how to furl a flag and understand furling a sail but "furling" a post???)

On the same track, on the bottom right side of each message there is an icon that relates to "Multi-Quote This Message". It's been there for a while but I've never understood that one either.

Oh great computer guru! Please bring guidance and understanding to those hapless sheep who wonder lost in cyberspace!

Happy Camping!

Re: OK, Shannon. You Can Explain Now, Please.

I have a fussy, tired li'l one in my arms right now but I promise I will help introduce the new features. Like a new car, many of the new features aren't required to drive they are just added features for folks who may use them. digg, technorati, del.icio.us and such for example are just popular community link/bookmark-sharing websites...ways for people on one site to find similar sites they might also enjoy. You'd click on those links if you used any of those sites and wanted to add WildTexas or a page from WildTexas to your profiles/bookmark lists on those sites.

Multiquote will take a quick tutorial by way of an example. So will the newly enabled RSS feeds (a way to syndicate content, thus allowing sites to share news and information--for example, we'll soon be publishing Texas travel and recreation news from other sites).

The forum software has been upgraded for stability, security and improved search engine placement (geekspeak for "making the site easier to find in the search engines, like Google and Yahoo.") The easier we are to find, the more company you guys will have here in the forums.

Re: OK, Shannon. You Can Explain Now, Please.

I travel and search for the site via mutiple search engines and its always right near the top, just to see.

Did the function disappear about who (members) is online?

Good spotting! Yes, I disabled it to see if it had any noticeable impact on server load (how hard the computer hosting the site has to work). Not sure yet if I will re-enable it or not. We are small enough, it does not seem to hurt anything when enabled.

Do you (or others) miss the feature?

Similarly, the social bookmarking links--digg, furl, etc.--are presently disabled while I mull over which, if any, make sense here.

Comments/critiques welcome. Still need to help tutor folks on some of the other new interface options.

(Reposting this with my message posting account; I keep accidentally posting with my maintenance account, which doesn't hurt anything, but is a bit impersonal.)

You enjoy the outdoors? That's all the demographic we need.

I'll turn the who's browsing feature back on. That was easy, wasn't it? Heheh :ribbit:

I do have a bug I'm trying to squash right now on the WildTexas.com home page -- the most recent threads aren't updating quite the way they should. I worked on it about five days ago, but something burped and needs coaxing to function again. (RESOLVED as of 11 PM CST, Tuesday).
