Thumbs up Limiting Light Pollution

I'd noticed a "DARK SKY ZONE" sign on our weekly road bike rides and wondered how someone pulled that off in our over-developed, horribly light polluted area of town. Turns out it's for military operations at nearby Camp Bullis. Hey, I'm all for it--I miss my dark skies for stargazing and meteor-watching from growing up, and I've been appalled at how AWFUL the commercial lighting fixtures are in our area as each new commercial complex has gone in (Target's the worst!)

More info: San Antonio, Texas' Planning & Development Services Department

Overview
The Camp Bullis Military Lighting Overlay District establishes regulations for outdoor lighting impacting military operations surrounding Camp Bullis.

- The MLOD regulates the type, intensity, and positioning of outdoor lighting for all properties
within 3 miles of Camp Bullis.
- Affects both commercial and residential properties in the 3 mile buffer zone as well as parking
lots, signs and street lighting.

- Additional information is forthcoming.

Angry Re: Limiting Light Pollution

I dare to disagree. Car dealerships are the worse. Exactly how many people shop for cars at night? All those lights just bounce right back up into the sky off of the shiny new hoods. There is no need for me to be able to read news print three blocks away from a dealership.

Re: Limiting Light Pollution

Ah, but we don't have any car dealerships nearby to compare it to. No one shops at Target after 10 PM but they keep all their parking lots lit like the 4th of July and they're using fixtures that might as well have been designed to *intentionally* broadcast light upwards and outwards instead of where it's meant to go, down to ground level to illuminate their parking lot.
