Good morning! Thanks for setting all this up!

I'm moving to work in Sheldon ISD, NE of Houston, next week. I'm thinking of settling in Baytown, because I have a nice rec. kayak, and it looks like a good place for some paddling. Any advice on places to explore via water, or any other scene in Baytown? Folks interested in the outdoors in general? Are there others there who might go in groups? I'll check the links on this page for the latter, but any tips would be great.

Be advised that because of its proximity to the ship channel, Baytown is heavily industrialized.... not that you couldn't find a decent place to live in the area. I'd make a scouting trip to the area before you finalize housing. Just my 2 cents.... :yes:

As ploddinTod said, Baytown is not the most scenic or healthy area to reside. Unless of course, you like the smell of petro-chemicals and the sight of refineries and pollution contributors. They don't call it the chemical coast for nothing!

I would suggest maybe heading north of Houston (up stream) to find some "healthy" kayaking. Or maybe there is some good kayaking on the Brazos river. I don't kayak, so I wouldn't be much help. But I would recommend that you check it out and do a little research before making any commitments. A move from the Big Bend Country to the east (industrial) side of Houston is a MAJOR contrast!

I've known of some teachers from Michigan that were enticed to sign on to teach down here because of big signing bonuses. And then they were extremely unhappy about the campuses and areas of town that they were assigned to. In fact, some of them were misled about their assignments. Just be forewarned.

I agree with the others. The Baytown area wouldn't be my first pick in places to be in the water due to the petrochemical plants. I wouldn't reccomend the east side of town at all. If you want to be on the water, try closer to the Gulf like Kemah, League City, Dickinson, etc. However, you will have quite the commute. Lake Houston has a bad reputation for being kinda yukky but I've seen several reports that indicate it has been cleaned up.

If you're going to be working on the NE side and you're willing to make the commute from Baytown, Lake Livingston or Lake Conroe wouldn't be much worse IMHO.

A good place in the Clear Lake area to kayak is Armand Bayou for a day trip. For a more extended outing, there's the Big Thicket east of Houston. It has creeks and one major river flowing through it. For safety reasons, I wouldn't try Clear Lake itself....too many fast power boats. :eek:
