Looking to buy a canoe and/or kayak in SA
I am looking to buy a canoe and /or a couple of kayaks. I am in the San Antonio area but willing to travel to get them. I am willing to consider anything, even if it needs work. Let me know if you have something or know of someone who does.
Thanks,
Sean

Re: Looking to buy a canoe and/or kayak in SA
Hi Sean,
Welcome aboard and glad your here. Hope you find what you need and that we can be of help.
Hate to say it but you may find your quest to be a bit difficult unless your very lucky and even faster. Went through the same hunt your going through now for about two years. Ended last spring when DW and I finally decided to buy two new 'yaks and quit hunting for anything used. Why, you ask? Because used canoes or 'yaks are about as scarce as hen's teeth! The few that we did find were either not worth having or priced so high that we might as well have purchased new. The good ones that are sold are often sold to friends of the seller and never go on the market. If they do end up on the market, they don't last long! We have an intra-office "For Sale" web site where I work (I do nothing but "browse" due to too much intra-office politics). Last week a 16' canoe popped up on the site. In less then 2 hours, it was "sold" and off the site. Best yet, this happened between 1 AM and 3 AM in the morning! Maybe 15% of the entire work force saw this ad, IF they were all looking! Given the way we work, it had to have been sold, "sight unseen"! They go that fast.
I'm not saying you can't find what your looking for. There are many members here and at least a few are paddlers. You may get a hit from this site or others like it and I sure hope you do. Just wanted you to know what DW and I went through and how we finally solved the issue. BTW: you'll find a list of our "toys" at the bottom of this message. We are very pleased with the 'yaks we finally purchased and hope that your search ends as well as ours did. Let me know if I can be of any help and...
Happy Camping & Paddling!

Hate to give up the sweet spot but keep an eye on http://austin.craigslist.org/. In the middle of the page (for sale section) you will see boats. You can look in Dallas, Houston, Austin as well as San Antonio. If you havnt been to this site its like ebay and a garage sale. Austin's and Dallas's sites are pretty active. Conoes and Kayaks come through there all the time. Good luck

Re: Looking to buy a canoe and/or kayak in SA
There is a place in Boerne called Texas Kayak (210) 382-8890 You can rent a kayak and try it out on Boerne Lake before buying. Most kayak shops that care about their customers recomend trying before buying. Kayaks have primary and secondary stability, and each acts differently. There is Cabelas in Buda. If you like to fish there are sit on top kayaks. There is a kayak website called texaskayakfisherman.com, there you will find used kayaks for sale, a fresh and salt water index. Also there is sun and ski sports here in San Antonio off hwy 281 north. Hope this helps

Another option, which you've probably considered, is heading the 1 hour (not during rush hour) up to Austin and checking out REI's kayak selection. Check online at REI.com first to see if they carry the type(s) you're interested in, then call the Austin store to see if they have any in stock and/or can order one for you.
(I'd post the phone #, but it appears REI.com is down for maintenance until 8 AM; I'll edit this post when the site's back online)
Good luck!

Austin Outdoor Gear & Guides has a ton of boats and may help you sell your old one. I know several people from DFW who have bought kayaks from them.

Re: Looking to buy a canoe and/or kayak in SA
I am interested in buying a canoe and live in the Austin area. Any advice on where to go to do some research on the best canoe for my husband and myself.

Re: Looking to buy a canoe and/or kayak in SA
For people in San Antonio and Austin, I recommend Texas Kayaks in Boerne, Austin Gear and Outdoor Guidance in Austin, Lone Star Kayaks in Austin, and Austin Canoe and Kayaks in Ausin and San Marcos. There are a couple demos going on this weekend. Austin Canoe and Kayak is having one and I think REI is having the other.
