I camped at the Birch Creek Unit at Lake Somerville SP on July 3 and 4. I just posted a detailed report in the Camping Forum. Here is a report on the kayak part of my trip:
I got up early Sat and did a nice trail run – jogging on one of the hiking trails. I saw a deer or two and enjoyed the run very much. Then I took the kayak on the trailer around to the beach by the fishing pier and boat ramp, because it was much closer to the island than my beach/camping area. It was around 9A when I headed out. The wind was making big waves – 2 foot or more, and they were coming across the bow of the boat unless I went directly in them. After I was about half way across to the island, I decided I was not comfortable, and if I made it, I would have a miserable return trip, so I headed to the shoreline about a mile from where I started. I made the shore and did some exploring, got back in and tried following the shore around but it was hard because the waves kept blowing me into the beach. So I headed back toward the fishing pier. The going was very tough – I had to go straight into the waves – riding up and then crashing down each wave, and going against the wind the paddling was very hard. I had it for one day and put the kayak back on the trailer. I never got to explore either island and would like to go back and try again sometime. I wonder if it is often windy there because the lake is so big. Of course, you can still paddle as long as the waves aren’t too big
I would like to go back and explore the two islands, but am worried that it seems to be a windy lake.
