Kayaking on the Trinity

Today I drove down to the Fort Worth Rowing Club boathouse on the Trinity, hoping to see some sculls in action. Well, they meet there the first Saturday of the month, so no go. Also, the breakwater/dam just below them, as shown in their pics, is overflowing with water, due to the heavy flow upstream. On top of that, it's posted as No Wading/No Swimming, due to unhealthy contact. Well, you can't row a scull or paddle a Kayak and NOT have contact. I wonder if their September regatte will be affected?

Anyway, I can see why they row there, and upstream, as the water is very smooth - smoother than most lakes, with little current. Probably due to the breakwater, which slows it down. So I was wondering if anyone has any exerience paddling the Trinity, and know of a gut put-in place. I wouldn't want to have someone have to drive and pick me up, so I would need a place where I could paddle both up- and down-stream, to get back to my put-in place. Oh, I'm not talking about whitewater conditions or rapids, I want easy paddling along the Trinity. I've biked and jogged many parts of the trail (further around the Zoo, Trinity Park, and University, etc) and don't recall ever seeing any Kayaks, with one exception. A week or two ago, when the Trinity was overflowing all the breakwaters and low-water-crossings, I saw a group of men with short, surf-kayaks, practicing in some rapids. I was told, they were practicing for surf like found on the coast.
