Floating the Brazos

Hello,

I am currently planning a weekend trip down the Brazos, launching at the Possum Kingdom Lake Dam, and taking out at Highway 4. I have not actually been to the area though, so I had a few questions.

Are there parking spots at those launch and take out sites?
Would it be free parking, and someplace we wouldnt have to worry about theft? I would like to be able to shuttle ourselves, so Im looking for the best option to do that.

How close are campsites from that initial launch point at the dam?
If I was to drive down after work Friday and launch by 7, would that leave me enough daylight to find a camp spot that evening?

Any other info, tips, pointers anybody can share for a first timer on this river?
Looks like water levels change frequently, but that this is generally a good time of the year to go?

Im reading everything I can find on the internet, but I am still kind of flying blind here.
So any info would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks,
Scott

Re: Floating the Brazos

I've only canoed the Brazos 3 times, all over ten years ago. Only factor I can add comment on is your second question: I do not think putting in at 7 leaves you enough daylight to find a good campsite AND pitch. Believe me, on some of the bluffs, you do not want to be putting up camp in the dark. my .02

Re: Floating the Brazos

Thank you for the info! I'll probably look into camping at the State park then that first night.

Do you remember anything about parking spots at that launch and take out site?

I was just told that it is about an hour drive from the state park to the take out point at Highway 4.

Does anybody know of any camping areas around the Highway 4 area?
