canoe question........

I have been considering a 16' square back canoe, plan on using a 5hp motor. Is a canoe more stable, less stable or about the same as a 14' jon boat? Never been in a canoe, but have had plenty of experience in several small jon boats.
thx

Re: canoe question........

Less stable but easier to paddle. Where do you plan to use it?

Re: canoe question........

When I bought my first aluminum canoe, I was advised not to buy a square stern canoe. 1. The stern is not as high as a double ended canoe, so a wave coming from behind can swamp you. 2. It is easier to sell a standard canoe if you get ready to. I took that advice, but I wanted to run a small Evidrude when I was lake fishing. So I bought a motor mount from the dealer, it costs about $50 and clamps to the canoe in seconds, the motor is then to the right of the canoe. I sold the canoe, but I still have the motor and mount for use on my next one.

Re: canoe question........

From hard experience, a canoe is just like a horse. It ain't manly to admit you have been thrown, although the only horsemen who haven't been thrown from a horse or the only canoe paddlers who haven't turned one over are those who never got on the horse or in the canoe in the first place. At some point you will turn yours over. 5 H.P. is the max. 3.5 is a lot better and it moves a 17' canoe pretty well. With regard to stability, the jon boat is a lot more stable. Canoewise, beware of backpaddling. When you backpaddle, do it gently. If you are in the rear of a canoe and you backpaddle agressively, you can swamp the canoe easily, and you would never suspect it until it happens.
