From hard experience, a canoe is just like a horse. It ain't manly to admit you have been thrown, although the only horsemen who haven't been thrown from a horse or the only canoe paddlers who haven't turned one over are those who never got on the horse or in the canoe in the first place. At some point you will turn yours over. 5 H.P. is the max. 3.5 is a lot better and it moves a 17' canoe pretty well. With regard to stability, the jon boat is a lot more stable. Canoewise, beware of backpaddling. When you backpaddle, do it gently. If you are in the rear of a canoe and you backpaddle agressively, you can swamp the canoe easily, and you would never suspect it until it happens.
