Question popup camper rental

I noticed several photos of a popup camper you rented for your Big Bend trip. What kind of amenities did it have, and if you don't mind my asking, how much did it cost?

You're in luck. I recently responded via email to a fellow Wild Texan who had the same question. Here's all of the information about our pop-up rental:

We rented a 2001 Viking Legend Pop-Up Trailer from a place called American Dream Vacations in Boerne, Texas. The rental cost $65/day and we rented it for 8 days (they offered 1 day of free rental). There was a $200 damage deposit that you get back in full if you return the rental unit clean and in good, working order. Total cost to us was $500.50 after the deposit was credited.

They rent all types of trailers, campers and full-size RVs and we will definitely use them again for our RV/camper needs.

Let me know if I can provide any other useful information. The only problems we had associated with the trailer were our own fault -- we had never towed anything before in Justin's new truck, and the hitch we purchased was too high. American Dream Vacations loaned us a 1" drop hitch, the only thing they could find, but they recommended we really use a 3" drop hitch in the future. It made getting the trailer hitched and un-hitched a lot more challenging than it should have been!

PS: I'll be posting a detailed write-up on the trip soon, but realize it's way overdue.

popups

When we decided to start camping we saw an old pop up in the yard next to my mother in laws house and we asked the guy if he wanted to sell it. He said sure and we asked him if we could check it out. The guy happily popped it up for us and we saw that it was a 1976 Starcraft and it needed some work. We offered the guy $500 for it and he smiled and said sure. It didn't have AC in it so we bought an old window unit for $50, sawed a hole it in the back and plopped it in and caulked it and shimmed it up. It would freeze you out!!!!!! We also did some work inside because we didn't like the colors ( avacado green, tangerine orange, and harvest gold) from the 70's. We used that thing for 3 years and it was great. It went to Big Bend, Arkansas, Mississippi, anywhere we wanted to camp. And that was pretty cheap if you compare it to renting a trailer.

Question Re: popup camper rental

Shannon,

I was wondering if you know of any place in the Dallas/Denton area where we can rent a pop-up. We are tossing around the idea of purchasing one, but wanted to give it a trial run first.

Thanks!
Tracy

Re: popup camper rental

Welcome to WildTexas.com, Zeke!

Our Web Guide is a great place to start -- it lists all the RV rental and sales locations that I am aware of in the State of Texas (if I've missed any, let me know!). Check it out: Recreational Vehicles (RV) Web Guide

If nothing else, there are some good RV/trailer camping forums linked in there that would be useful to lurk on and see what folks are talking about -- good places to rent from, particular brands or models to avoid, etc.

I do highly recommend renting before making the big investment in purchasing one. I know our pop-up experience in Big Bend taught us a few things, and made us better informed if we ever invest in some form of haul-along camping/living accommodations.
