I am in the process of adding KOA campgrounds to our Wild Texas Parks & Campgrounds Directory.

There are only a dozen or so listed right now, but you can search for KOA Campgrounds specifically via our Parks Search now.

Enjoy, and stay tuned to the Parks Directory as it's getting some much-needed work.

(I haven't forgotten about the Park Reviews but I need to do a major end-of-year push to get more parks pages out on the site, so the reviews have something to link to besides other peoples' websites )

Curious on adding KOA's are they are a destination for some campers? Most lack the "wild" aspect
Don't get me wrong we have used them on the way to somewhere, would be interesting to hear how others use them.

The criterion for being within scope of WildTexas.com is less about "wilderness" (frankly, there is very little true wilderness left in Texas, or in the Lower 48 for that matter) and more about getting outdoors, enjoying outdoor activities -- whatever that might be (camping, hiking, fishing, boating, photography, stargazing/astronomy, running and walking, cycling, even golf and hunting, etc.)

KOA campgrounds aren't my destination du jour, but they do serve the needs of some folks, particularly travelers just passing through our great State. Just as many of the parks we list don't offer overnight camping, parks that are primarily simply a place-to-tie-up-the-"horses" serve a need for the Texas traveler and outdoor adventurer.

The only KOA I've stayed at is the one in San Antonio. BEcause there just AREN'T any SP's near enough there to make it feasible to do the touristy things in SA.

I like it, however. Nice pool, jacuzzi, those Banana Peel bikes to rent for son, the little 'cook wagon' on site that serves nice hot breakfasts for cheap. And convenient to downtown. Yep, can't be beat for a layover.

We stayed at KOA at Mathis and had a good time,they had neat stuff for the kids to do.We would have loved to stay at State Park but we were with another family.

We stayed here in August of '03...when we still had our popup. The first night, a train roared through at 1 am and nearly put us all on the ceiling! Repeat at 5 am. Nice people running the place offered us a different site, but frankly, had they been on their game, they would not have put us in a site next to the track to start! The track, BTW, was hidden behind trees, else we'd have taken notice and said something before setting up camp. Between the two, Lake Corpus Christi SP is by far the superior choice. We've camped there 3 times since the KOA.

OTOH, we've had nothing less than a positive experience each time we camped at the San Antonio (Alamo) KOA. It's fairly quiet and the bus stop out front makes travel to the downtown areas a breeze.
