Running & Walking?

While the hard-core runners among us might view "walking" as mutually exclusive to "running", they both involve transportation using one's own legs... and eventually, we all slow to a walk.

Check out our Web Guide's Running & Walking category for links to clubs, organizations and race schedules.

Walkers -- did you know the Texas Volkssport Association is based in Texas (Universal City, to be exact)? Check it out -- lots of great walking information, with information on the history of "volksmarching/volkswalking" (origin: German).

i've noticed that there is a huge deficit of public running tracks and paths in san antonio, at least in the NW area of SA... in Boston, every school had a track (a rubber one at that), and they were open to the public. the schools in my area actually padlocks the fences. the only running trails i've found were out beyond the 1504 loop up by I-10... am i missing something? or do these facilities just not exist down here? is it a state wide phenomenon, or is it just san antonio?

I know several active San Antonio area runners, including one accomplished and actively competing triathlete. Despite my personal experience to the contrary, though, I don't think San Antonio has a very active running culture. The heat and humidity probably have something to do with it, as well as the city's general predisposition to the notion that sports = football and not much else.

Although school's back in session, I can't imagine some of the school tracks wouldn't be accessible when not in use by students. For example, Justin and I went to Reagan High School (NE side) a month or so ago to launch battery-powered RC planes. We used the football field after a father and son wrapped up their two-man soccer match. The track and field were accessible (not padlocked).

Your best bet is probably to hook up with a local running club and see where they do their runs. They'll have sorted out the various access issues and probably have other recommendations for running sites near your home, as well.

Re: Running & Walking?

I started jogging during the Ken Cooper Aerobics craze. I quickly found out, running around a track is one of the most boring things in the world to do. Find a park or trail. Some cities have better trail systems than others, but they are becoming more common.
