"GO!"... anyone for a 2010 challenge?

    Hello Wild'uns,

So here we are, 2010, and I hope this finds everyone enjoying a safe and happy New Years holiday.

Festivities over, now it's "go time" for making good on the resolutions and changes to our lifestyles we vow to make each year. This thread isn't about those. I'm not changing my lifestyle and habits.

What I am doing is publicly challenging myself, and inviting others to do the same, to keep with the activities congruous to those on this forum and "Go" at least the equivalent of the approximate width of Texas, 830 miles during the year of 2010.

I, like "all ya'll Wild'uns" (<- How's that for Texan?) I enjoy getting out and about in Texas. The idea of the challenge is to walk, hike, run, paddle, cycle, backpack, swim, or whatever it is you do under your own body's power for the purpose of recreation or excercise aside from the daily routine of moving around the office, shopping, chores, etcetera.

    That's 830 miles/year. An average of: 69 miles/month, 16 miles/week, 2.3 miles a day. Not too difficult, just takes some commitment.

For those wanting to participate, keep track daily and we can post up our progress at the end of each month to keep each other motivated and inspired towards the goal.

If there's enough participation, perhaps Shannon could consider making it a sticky.

So then, who's in? Let's "GO!"

It's absolutely do-able, and you can bet this is now a sticky post. I, for one, had a horrible 2009 health-wise and am ringing the New Year in sick, again/still, but I finally have some sunlight on the horizon--sinus surgery on January 26, 2010. My chronic sinus infections, headaches and lack of energy really took a toll in 2009 and I'm not about to have 2010 go the same way.

And I have terrific inspiration because Justin (hubby of 11 years, soulmate of 21 years) just tallied up his 2009 bicycling totals and it's amazing--
Read more in his year-end blog post: http://bike-geek.blogspot.com/2010/0...g-on-2009.html
He rode his bicycle a total of 3,349 miles in 2009!

    Mileage Totals:
    Commuting: 2,118 (biking to work)
Training: 612 (preparing for an event)
    Fitness: 158 (general fitness rides)
Recreation: 199 (easy rides with family)
Events: 96 (organized rides, special events)
    Touring: 163 (overnight touring trips)
    TOTAL: 3349

Another way to look at this mileage is he spent 287 hours on the bicycle, climbed 137,400 feet and burned about 180,000 calories. It was the most mileage he'd ever done in one year.

WELL DONE, YOU! I can see I have some catchup work to do! My having surgery last week also lowered Justin's cycling totals considerably, since he had to take off work (hence no bike commuting) and watch over me & kidlet. And this week it's foggy & rainy, and he's working late, so that's eating his cycling opportunities again. Even still, he's far and away ahead of me... kidlet is, too, for that matter. I'm healing up well from the sinus surgery and need to get my energy levels back up--posts like yours, and a partner like Justin, and I'll be catching up soon!

Thanks!.. that made my day. Won't be too long before you are 100% and ready to get out there. You'll surpass me quickly too as I'm going it all afoot with maybe a little summer kayaking thrown in the mix. Thanks for the motivation.
