This might not seem too important but I would like to know how to determine my distance by steps. In other words, how many steps make a mile? I know, there are variants in determining this. I walk medium fast so the steps are a little longer than the casual walking. I had to start walking at the college for my safety. My County Road is like the Indie 500 and between stepping off the road everytime a car or truck comes along and shooing off the BIG dogs I had to move locations. I can't measure distance with my own vehicle as they may become angry with my big truck on the walking path, . Can anyone give me any info in trying to determine distance? I use a pedometer for the amount of steps taken.
Thanks,
Sandy

First rule in Texas.. distance is determined by time of travel, not length of travel.![]()
None the less, I would like to know distance for my own record keeping. I know how long I walk.
There are a number of good orienteering web sites the boy scouts use. (use orienteering and measure)We tend to use the pace method for most adults one walking pace is around 5 feet, so 10 paces is 50 feet if we need to get moving fast. If time permits, we also measure with a 100 ft. tape measure. Starting at one end, pace (walk) to the other end counting your paces as you go. Walk naturally! Important to keep in mind: 2 steps=1 stride, 1 step=1pace.Once you reach the end of your first 100-foot pacing exercise, write down the number of paces you took
Follow this same routine 3 more times; walk back down the tape, walk back up, and finally, walk back down. Write down the number of paces you took after each time you complete the 100-foot pace. After you have completed your four pacing exercises, calculate your average number of paces that you took during your 100-foot walks. (Add each “# of paces” together and divide by four.)
Now calculate your average pace by dividing 100 by your “average number of paces.”
Thanks to all. I really want to keep track of how far I walk over the next month or six months. Again, thanks.
Sandy
You can get cheap pedometers that give miles as well as steps. You "calibrate" them for you the length of your stride. I use one when I jog - just be aware that it is not totally accurate, as your stride length can vary.
Just be careful on road,if you have a school near by you can do laps on the track, ours is 4 laps == 1 mile.We always have a group walking at our high school track.Have fun and hope you reach your goal.
