Lake Mineral Wells State Park

I just read that this Park has some 85 climbing routes or all levels, with permanent anchor points for belaying and rappeling. I would like to take my son there this spring when he comes to visit from Seattle.

Has anyone tried these routes? Can I rent ropes and equipment somewhere in the area?

I also would like to kayak the lake and camp. Can anyone tell me about the other activities and facilities. I see they may be undergoing some construction now. Can you still get in and around?

Re: Lake Mineral Wells State Park

Haven't been out there in a while but it is a great park. Not a "climber" but I do enjoy going over to the area (Penitentiary Hollow) a watching others risk their necks. No equipment rental that I know of but I could be wrong. I very much enjoy hiking the trails around the lake and that will give you a very good work out.

Park has very nice camping with many sites offering some pretty good privacy. Our top choices are Sites 55 and 86. Both are "power & water" sites. Shower houses are always neat and clean.

Lake is nice, if a bit dark at all times and often muddy. I've never had but fair luck as far as fishing goes and it is not a lake I would swim in. Have yet to take the 'yaks out there but it is in the plans for spring.

This is just a quick overview and I'm still looking to write a full review on this park. Need to get out there for a few days to get all the info and pix together to get it done. If you have any other specific questions, post them and see if I can answer them. Until then, have a great trip and,

Happy Camping!

Re: Lake Mineral Wells State Park

Like Turn Key, I don't do any climbing, but I do like to hike, and Mineral Wells has some trails you might like. Within the park are numerous trails, especially on the west side of the lake. Then there is a rails-to-trail trailway stretching all the way from Mineral Wells to Weatherford, with a connection to the park. Although I've hiked a section of it, I think it really is better for biking.

You can see a review I wrote of the trailway and the park trails at Lake Mineral Wells State Park and Trailway. My moniker on that site is "kcameron".

Hope you enjoy,

Re: Lake Mineral Wells State Park

Well you are not getting much help on the climbing aspect as I am not a climber either. As to construction you can get around to all areas. They are just upgrading/repairing some roads and other facilities in the park.
