Bolt Failures

Hello fellow climbers, I am currently undertaking my thesis as part of my undergraduate degree in mech eng. My topic is on the safety of cliff face bolts.

I request your assistance so I can document and characterise bolt failures.

Can you please provide the following information to assist in my preliminary research:

- What climb was it
- Which bolt failed (2nd, 3rd up)
- When did it occur (date)
- What were the circumstances
- Did the bolt, rock or glue fail
- Was there still a smell of resin or glue
- Do you still have the bolt (if so can you send pics)
- What were the forces, did you fall on it or were you resting
- did it fail on you or someone else.

This information will greatly help my research and ultimately all who climb. Opinions and fall stories are all welcome as well as any issues or comments on bolting failures and expectations of the bolts by climbers.

Benjamin.

Re: Bolt Failures

Noticed you were from Australia. Don't you fall up?

Re: Bolt Failures

Wow, goodluck with the bolt failure project. Not to many bolts come popping out in these parts. And pro climbers never clip or depend I should say on an old rusty bolt. You may however find loose and poor bolts where sandstone routes are?

Re: Bolt Failures

If a bolt fails, does anyone live to tell about it???

What a cool project! Try the Summit Post website. They have a message board and the site is dedicated to those who live and die for technical climbing. The website is:
