Thumbs up Tips: Making Better Travel & Family Videos

Justin & I just picked up a super-simple, super-portable Flip Ultra HD videocamera to replace our rarely used, bulky old Sony videocamera that was never used much because it's far too fiddly/needlessly complicated.

Even though the Flip is easy-to-use (very few buttons & very few menu options), their website has a helpful section on how to take and create better videos -- with any videocamera (when they mention their "FlipShare software" just know any video editing software will do the trick!)

This is good stuff! I'm a still photographer who finds herself taking a lot of videos for fun, and there are some terrific insights and reminders here that are bound to improve our family's videos --

Again, it applies to any camera you might use to create videos; here are the individual tips & tutorials from Flip's website:
  • Storytelling Tips: how to create compelling videos
  • Shooting Tips: how to capture what you're seeing more effectively
  • Production Tips (editing): how to remove unwanted material from your videos and more professionally edit them.
  • Distribution Tips (where to upload, etc.): Some good suggestions on websites where you can share your finished videos. Since the website is geared towards non-profits using videos to get their message out, some of the suggestions may not be available but it's still a good summary, covering the usual suspects -- YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook -- and a bunch of others you might not have heard of but might find useful.
All in all, I was surprised by the simple but useful information presented. I hope it helps you create more compelling, memorable videos of your family, friends and travels.
