San Geronimo Fly-In (June 21)

Posted from an email Justin just sent out regarding yesterday's San Geronimo Airpark fly-in. Fly-ins are something cool for photographers in the area who want to photograph people & planes one weekend instead of landscapes & wildlife:

Quote:
EAA Chapter 35 hosted their June ’03, Young Eagles Fly-In yesterday at San Geronimo Airpark. I’ve just posted about 28 images from the event and they are now available on NoticeToAirmen.com. All images were captured with a Canon EOS 10D and either a EF 300mm F4L-IS or EF 28-135mm-IS lens.

The direct link to the gallery is below:
CHAPTER 35 – JUNE 2003 – YOUNG EAGLES

A big THANKS to the pilots that dedicated their time to make this event a success and to the ground crews that handled ATC, sausage cooking (awesome!!) and more. Everyone is so friendly and it made for a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Enjoy your weekend and STAY COOL…(heat indexes in the 100’s today!!)

Sincerely,

Justin W. Moore

P.S.: High quality prints of the images are available for sale, with a portion of the sale donated back to EAA Chapter 35. CD-ROM slideshows are also available for this fly-in and previous events as well. Let me know if you’re interested!

Very nice! I love images that are perfectly focused and exposed so that it just feels like I could reach out and touch it. One of those can be seen here . Can you recall if that was with the 28-135 or the 300mm??

Thank you!!

I believe just about EVERY shot from that fly-in was captured with the Canon 10D and the Canon EF 300mm F4L-IS lens.

The 300mm F4L-IS lens rocks. The f4.0 aperture combined with the magnification effect of the 10D (since the CMOS sensor is smaller than 35mm, it means that all of the lenses you put on your 10D are actually 1.6x longer). This means when I'm shooting that 300mm lens with the 10D, it becomes a 480mm F4L!!!

At 480mm, with f4.0...the background doesn't have a chance....and the subjects really "pop".

"pop" the images do! The L Series lenses from Canon are simply amazing. I didn't want to get a fixed focal length lens because I feel caged in with those, but I have been looking and dreaming about the EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM. With a 1.4 or 2x multiplier (haven't made up my mind on that one yet) it would give me 448 or 640 effective mm. I think I would probably go with the 2x multiplier as it would open up several situations that could not be done with 448. One of the things I really like about the lens is that the f/2.8 will be much nicer than the 300mm 5.6 I work with now. I realize the 2x multiplier would make the 2.8 effectively 5.6, but hey... I would have 640 figgen MM!
