Hill Country 2006 Pre-season Wildflower Report

Hill Country 2006 Pre-season Wildflower Report - Nine counties and 413 miles

Friday, 3/10/2006, I took the grand-tour of Mason, Llano, San Saba, Burnet, Blanco, Gillespie and Kendall Counties to do a pre-season analysis of the wildflower conditions there. My trip covered 413 miles traversing nine counties in the Hill Country.

Good news: I did find bluebonnets blooming. I even found some Drummond’s phlox and Texas paintbrush.

Bad news: The coverage of bluebonnets is very sparse, and it is even less for other wildflowers. The entire route was marked by dry vegetation.

Bummer but thanks for varifying what I was pretty sure would be the case. At least we won't be expecting as much when we head down there next month. Can't expect an awsome display every year and as long as I get my week in the Hill Country, I'll survive !

Happy Camping!

I have not given up hope. We have rain in the forecast this week. With rain comes hope that the seedlings that survived will grow and mature. There are seedlings out there, just not widespread nor as dense as in previous years. Yesterday, I saw a small patch of bluebonnets along I-10 near Loop 1604 (northwest of San Antonio). Normal rainfall right now could bring some areas like the ones I have seen to a fair-to-average year.
