I usually mainly focus on outdoor photography and I always seem to need the zoom when I don't have it. I usually use a Canon EF 28-135 for general outdoors. This lens gives me the short length to be able to capture some nice landscapes while offering some telephoto. But in my opinion, when shooting outdoors it is best to have the longest lens possible. I can't give any recommendations on Nikon lenses because I have never really looked at them. But I have heard a bunch of good things about Sigmas 50-500 lenses. You can take a look here: http://www.sigma-photo.com/html/pages/50_500_EX.HTM
