Anyone around?

Well, it looks like it's been quiet around here, judging from the dates of the last thread... but I'll try anyway.

I'm not a photographer. I wish I was. I have a nice new camera. I took photography in HS, but don't remember too much. I'm looking to get back into a hobby that I once enjoyed, while also getting outside a bit more. I found this forum through looking for san antonio community ed classes on photography.

In the past year, I gave up a career as an environmental scientist in Boston and moved to San Antonio -it is a whole different world down here. I'm looking to get out a bit more so that I feel a little more connected to my new home- and show my friends and family (and myself) how beautiful it can be in Texas. I'd also like to use up some of my free time, which, being in a new city, more or less alone (i am married, my husband is here, but he goes to work), and unemployed, i have way too much of.

From this forum, i'm hoping to develop my skill a little bit by being a fly on wall, and by asking questions as they come up (and i can't find an answer to elsewhere). I recently took up homebrewing beer, and found a wonderful, lively forum that has been an enormous wealth of information and advice, and has been very enjoyable to participate in. I'm hoping that at some point, this forum also be as positive of an experience.

the first question that i have been unable to answer for myself:
i have my wedding photo negatives (i got married right before moving, and employed an up and coming wedding photographer to take the pics- and he just gave me all the negatives since he knew we were leaving town forever) that i need to have developed. all i have so far are the proofs the photographer gave me- i have no prints at all. i would like to know a good, reliable place to get the prints made- i am NOT taking the negatives to costco =). ideally, i'd like to get the prints made in time to accompany holiday gifts for family members and a trip to see family in hawaii in january. if anyone knows of good quality, reliable photo lab in the san antonio/austin TX area, please let me know... our family is getting fed up with waiting.

thanks for reading all this.

You might look into San Antonio Photo Lab. Back when we shot primarily print film (versus digital media), we got most of our photos developed there. You might let them do some "less important" photo development work for you to get a feel for their staff and abilities before subjecting your once-in-a-lifetime wedding photos to them (or anyone, for that matter). Just to be on the safe side, you know? However, I wouldn't be recommending them if we hadn't used them fairly frequently and on fairly important images in the past.

Another option I neglected to mention is River City Silver, also here in San Antonio and a lab Justin's used for development work.
