Woo-Hoo! Got a site at Old Garner!

Had ressies for this past week in New Garner. When I got there, on a whim I asked if they had any sites available at OG & they lady said SURE!! We got a terrific site only 3 down from the rocky beach for a week! My son could walk down to the river & go to the rope swing & I could see it from our campsite!! It was perfect! And there were at least TWO sites near us that never had ANYONE on them the entire time we were there!

On the trip itself: it was sunny Sunday, POURED all Sunday night so the river was up at least a foot & muddy brown! No rain Monday but the river flow was something else! Started clearning up by Tuesday; Wednesday was great & today we had to leave . But the Frio was back to it's clear green....

Had an awesome time -- not too much noise & the convenience of the site MORE than made up for it! However, there is just NO wildlife in OG (all we saw were the 4 resident geese.....).

Garner would typically be completely booked this time of year, right? I guess the rain being so omnipresent this summer is keeping people away and causing them to cancel...? Especially the tent campers like us. I am enjoying the cooler weather but don't want to tent camp in the rain. That's why you pop-up/RVers have a great advantage all year. Someday I will join your ranks and be able to take advantage of camping no matter the weather! sigh.

Yeah. Perhaps it IS all the rain. However, I expressed surprise to the clerk there & she said people typically book reservations for a couple or three weeks' window the year before & then just cancel the days they don't need when the time comes & they know when exactly their vacation will be. They only pay the $10 cancellation fee.

Because of our washout at Garner and 2 reunions we might get a 4 day trip to keep promise to kids in Sept.Did you notice any damage to the park?Well it sounds like you still had a good time.

Nope, no damage at all that I could see. You COULD see some debris (pine needles/leaves/paper) hanging in the trees from the flood last month. About 5' up. So SOME of the sites *might* have been flooded but all the sections were open when we went. Didn't ever get into NG so I don't know about those.
