Thumbs up Whitewater Sports -Guadelupe River

Just camped out at Whitewater Sports up near Canyon Lake. I had a great time. Our campsite included water and electricity and the restrooms/showers were not far away and the river was about 70 yards from our campsite.

This part of the Guadalupe has a horseshoe shape. After renting our tubes we walked about 1/4 mile up the road to another part of the river. Floated for about 3 hours and ended up right back at our campsite. Restocked supplies (beer) and did it again.

This was my first trip to the Guadalupe and I had a blast. Just thought I would share. If you know any other cool places on the Guadalupe, fill me in. Thanks

There are lots of outfitters on River Road. Wherever you tube, please be careful. There are parts of the river that can kill you. Slumber Falls and Clutter Falls to name two. Get a good map of the river and ask questions.

Here is one trip we took that was fun and easy. Our base was Guadalupe River State Park. http://www.usaer.com/RV-journeys-2005.htm

We always like that loop. Not too rough and definetly a good beer float.
I thought they quit allowing beer on the river? Or maybe that was styro coolers???
This is the time of year to go though. Another couple of weeks and all hell breaks loose

Re: Whitewater Sports -Guadelupe River

I do not mean to scare people away from the Guadalupe River. It is a beautiful river that has lots of exciting parts. The loop being discussed is a fairly easy trip.

However, there are parts of the river that can kill you. I quit going to the Guadalupe because I was tired of saving stupid people (and/or their children) who had not researched the river before renting a tube.

I actually had to save a 5-year old in a swimming pool float (!) because his father let go of him when he went over a small dam because he was worried about his beer cooler.

My girlfriend and I were just floating in our tubes, when she was hit in the head by a drunk who had rented a canoe and had no idea what he was doing. After we got her out of the water and to the hospital, she had a concussion.

Two different times, parents went over falls first and then could not get back to help their kids who had lost their tubes.

We were on a tube trip that was supposed to take 3-4 hours. Someone died upstream and they shut the dam down to retrieve the body. We were on the river for 8 hours, 2-3 of them in the dark.

Responsible outfitters will have maps and give you guidance as to what to do and what to avoid. The river can be a butt-dragging experience and it can also be white water.

This is not just the Guadalupe, ANY river in Texas can surprise you with natural and manmade obstructions and flashflooding.

Be safe and sure.

Re: Whitewater Sports -Guadelupe River

I used to canoe the Guadalupe a good bit, but it's too crowded most of the time. I find the lower to be a fairly fun run of whitewater, but not particularly dangerous.. in a canoe or kayak. A tube, that's a whole different matter.
