Ray Roberts SP (Johnson Branch) 4/08

Located just North of Dallas on the Elm Fork of the Trinity River lies a park with lots to offer for those in North Texas.

The Johnson Branch Unit is on the north shore of Ray Roberts Lake, its an extra 40 minutes or so from the Isle du Bois unit on the South side. The park has a nice paved trail (and some harder trails also) There are almost 5 miles of backpack trails (not paved)

Swimmers can find a nice sandy beach, (but bring lotion lots of sun burn (us too)
Kids can find 2 playgrounds, and birders have lots to see too

The park has 104 sites with water/electric (and was full in April) There are 50 walk in campsites. Also a boat ramp, and fish cleaning station.

We attended the fireside chat at the Oak Point meeting area one night, learned about black bears and the reintroduction to Texas.

For a visual short tour Slideshow of pictures, photos, and videos, from webshots

Enjoy

After many years of staying at the Isle du Bois unit, we started utilizing the Johnson unit. That short extra drive required seems to lessen the crowd somewhat. As your pictures showed, it is a wonderful little getaway. Thanks for posting the narrative and slide show so that others may enjoy.

That's nice seeing the photos of the campsites. Very handy. The beach area looks nice also. Lake Mineral Wells is set up like that. Someday we'll get up that way.

Wow, way cool. This isn't too far away for me so I think I'll check it out this summer. Thanks!

Re: Ray Roberts SP (Johnson Branch) 4/08

As noted the Isle Du Bois is closer to Highway 380 so 40 minutes closer to East Texas (see review pre picture fun,) from last fall

Ray Roberts Lake SP Isle Du Bois Unit 9/30/07

Can not count the times we have been to both, especially when kids camped with us. If you like a long bike ride there is a trail from Hwy 380 also, see the state web site, its 12 miles one way gravel, but rideable for street bikes

Both are busy parks this time of year, those scouts (boy and girl and cub) are out. Met a cub pack with 115 "scout family total" at Johnson Branch
I can't phantom that big of a group but they were there.
