PINS Current Conditions & Advice

Hello folks! I & wife Ceil are brand new to "Wild Texas" and want to thank you for making this site available. I've been reading several threads and gleened a lot of very helpful information but have not been able to find answers to my specific questions about PINS. We are CONSIDERING a fall trip to the shore and were hoping to be able to get current beach conditions and restrictions online somewhere. I suppose we could pick up a landline and call the ranger station but I was hopeful to find some way to track conditions regularly. Here comes the crazy part of this post... I've read that since oil & gas drilling was opened up down island that it isn't all that uncommon to see full-size simitrucks on the lower parts of the beach. So I figured, of course, that if I were to air-down all the tires on my 4X4 P/U & 28' travel trailer I should, if conditions are right, be able to go pretty far south and enjoy some REALLY secluded camping. Okay... fire away! Just be fairly kind? My problem is I keep getting away with a lot of my hairbrained ideas.

Thanks for any input you can offer.

Re: PINS Current Conditions & Advice

I can't remember the site, but when I was investigating boon-docking on the island -- there was a site that gave all these really cool hints. One was deflate your tires to between 13-15 pounds. He really stressed that it be no greater than 15psi to avoid getting stuck in the sand.

I think I found it googling 'boondocking in PINS' or 'boondock camping in PINS".

Re: PINS Current Conditions & Advice

Thanks "happybooker"! I did the search and found an Airstream group that apparently has a few members that have ventured down the island with their rigs. As you indicated, "Airing Down" all the tires seems to be the biggest key to success. That and keeping up to date on tides and weather. Making the trip during low tide allows one to stay on the wet, compact sand.
