Old Garner vs. New Garner

There are some opening for a couple of three day weekends we have coming up. What do you all recommend old vs. new for tent camping with 5 kids ages: 12 11 8 6 5

Believe it or not, I have never ever been to Garner, but my entire family, including our two oldest have several times. Gracias!

Re: Old Garner vs. New Garner

New Garner is a little further away from the dances-good swimming holes-a little smaller sites.Old Garner is closer to dances-good swimming-larger spots, but any spot at Garner is fine with my family. Also are you going to tent or rv?Dw and Dd like new for rv and old for tents, Ds and Me don't care just so we can swim, hike, and bike.

Re: Old Garner vs. New Garner

We've done both. New gets a bit crowded. If you find yourself hollering for the kids, NG might be better as you would disturb fewer people. If taking a site in OG with W&E, get one that backs up to the cabins, there is more shade and the deer walk thru there at night.

If you choose NG, get a site along the outer edge that backs up to the river. We were given a site with partial shade and a private trail to the river. That was great! We didn't need to pack the cooler in the car, just send a kid up the hill to get his own drink, while you stay in your nice little spot by the river. We went the weekend after Labor day last year and on Sunday, had the park to ourself. We broke camp after breakfast, left the truck in the site, and swam all day. We drove home wet, sunburned, and happy!

On a weekend, I highly recommend new Garner, unless a lot of noise and a constant stream of vehicles driving through doesn't bother you, which has been my experience with old Garner. As far as new Garner is concerned, I would avoid the sites along the river at Persimmon Hill because you will hear vehicles zooming across the FM 1050 bridge over the Frio all night long; not very restful!

Have a great trip!

Re: Old Garner vs. New Garner

I would camp in old garner, this time of the year. In the summer, we like new garner. It's further away from the crowds. If you don't like what you have reserved, the park staff will work with you to find a spot that you like. Old garner will put you closer to all the things to do-- hiking, dancing, swimming or just plain relaxing. It doesn't get much better!!

Re: Old Garner vs. New Garner

I think we are going to try Old Garner first, since noise will be okay, I hope. With 5 kids, who knows if we won't be the offenders. Plus, water will be the big activity. We are going on a Thursday, leaving on a Saturday, since the kids have many a few Friday's off. I will let you know how it goes.

Any place around Gardner is great. What counts is getting out of the city and enjoying the Hill Country.

Definitely OG for kids! My son could walk to the river & from the campsite I had last year I could see the rope swing from the Pop up! He could ride his bike to the Pavilion and a couple of nights I went back after dinner but he wanted to stay so he rode his bike back later. There is a lot of noise & traffic but everyone drives slow & watches out for the kiddos.
