Need help with Garner SP.....

Some of you that go each year I need to pick your knowledge...

We want to go to Garner again this summer & stay 5 nights. Has to be arranged around my son's time with his dad & we wanted to stay in Old Garner. Last time we stayed at Rio Frio & LOVED IT, but just wanted to try OG.

OK, so I go online & there ARE sites available for when we could go in the other areas of the park (River Crossing, Rio Frio, etc.). OG is completely booked except for single days here & there. All summer long.

Questions: I know this is only January. Should I wait for a few months & see if anything opens up at OG? Could I go ahead & book for one of the other places now & if anything opens up at OG switch my campsite? Will RA allow you to do this?

Are sites more likely to come available the closer it gets to the summer? Or should I just give up on OG for this summer and stay at Rio Frio again?

What to do, oh wise ones?

There's a place just across the river called Magers Rivers Camp; you can walk into the park from there. HUGE old cypress trees, and nice, shady campsites. That would be my choice.

Re: Need help with Garner SP.....

I would go ahead and reserve the sites that available at Rio Frio. You can watch the reserveamerica site closer to your time of departure to see if any available sites come up. You have to check it every day and sometimes check a couple of times a day. If you find the dates you need, try to call the Parks and Wildlife reservation site first. Then, if you don't want to wait, reserve it online. Remember it is not in concrete until it is confirmed. I have done this and it is funny to see the sites come available. I guess some book a couple of weeks and then figure out when they can go and cancel the rest.
I have also booked single days as they come available and then go to TP&W and combine all the reservations into one. Sites will come available. You have to be "on the ball" and not wait.
We normally book 11 months in advance. It sounds silly but we get the time we want. Good Luck!!
