Kath,

I'm not a fisherman, so I can't help you there. However, if you are interested in hiking then you might want to check my postings at another site.

I've hiked within MWSP as well as along the Trailway between Mineral Wells and Weatherford.

Re: Mineral wells or Possum Kingdom?

Welcome aboard "kath". Hope we can help you enjoy your time out doors.

Going to cover my thoughts on Possum Kingdom because they are few. Have never camped there but did take a look a few years ago. Even though there is nothing wrong with the park, we were not very impressed. Sites appear on the small side with little or no privacy. This is a very big issue for us. We just don't like to hemmed in. Park seems to have been designed with the many fisherman that frequent this lake in mind. If your not intending to spend the majority of your time fishing, I can't see the draw of this park. Mind you, we saw nothing really wrong. Just didn't fit our idea of camping.

Mineral Wells is one of the parks we frequent and enjoy. Sites are fairly well spaced out with trees and brush offering some seclution. One of the best features of the park is the fact that the camping area is on one side of the lake and the "Day Use" area is on the other. A very good arrangement as far as I'm concerned. There is extensive hiking in the park with some moderate challenges and you also have access to the Mineral Wells State Trailway off of the "Day Use" area. Also connected with the "Day Use" area is Penitentiary Hollow, an area were many enjoy rock climbing and repelling. At my age, that's a bit beyond me but I do enjoy watching and taking the stairs to the bottom of the hollow. The lake offers fair to good fishing for crappie and cats. Have had little luck with bass though I know others who have. Park Store leaves a lot to be desired but you'll find a Wal-Mart and other stores about 4 miles west of the park road entrance.

I really need to get a full review written on this park but it's one of those things that sits on the back burner and never seems to get done. Going to have to make sure that the next time we're at Mineral Wells I finish gathering all the needed information and get on with it. Until then, I guess this will have to do and I hope it's a help to you. Below is a site reference that should give a bit more info:

Mineral Wells State Park

Also, if I can answer any other questions, feel free to ask. Until then and always,

Happy Camping!

Re: Mineral wells or Possum Kingdom?

Mineral Wells is the better camping spot, in my opinion. Both offer fishing from shore although access is difficult in certain areas of Mineral Wells. There is a little inlet at Possum Kingdom right near the shelter area that tends to hold some sand bass.

You would enjoy a visit at either place. If you choose PK be sure and take all you need as it is a good ways back to any town.

Enjoy your visit

Re: Mineral wells or Possum Kingdom?

HI
thank you everyone, im really glad it found this site the other day
i have been camping since as long as i can remeber, my mom was a member of a pre 1840 renactment group called comanche peak
for i grew up camping the hard way LOL and still love to rough it but as ive got older a few modern things are nice heheh like propane lanterns instead of candle lanterns

I think we are going to go to Mineral wells this time and maybe drive over to Pk one day to check it out
the idea of the day use area on the other side of the lake is great! dont think ive ever been to a state park that was setup like that, wouldnt it be nice if they all were???

Re: Mineral wells or Possum Kingdom?

Hello everyone and its great to meet all of u

I think we will be going to mineral wells state park, the idea of the day use area on the other side of the lake is just too apealing to me LOL
another reason i noticed no jet skis are allowed, this is a really nice thing for people who fish from the bank esp since the local lake Ray Hubbard is a city play house to most people, we tend to like to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city

we will probably drive over to PK one day to check it out also since its not really that far

A co-worker of mine went to PK last weekend. Didn't elaborate beyond, "It was great!".

Thumbs up Re: Mineral wells or Possum Kingdom?

I don't know about Possum Kingdom but Mineral Wells the catfish, and craupy are excellent. If you are craupie fishing i would use Minow's, but don't fish on bottom. With the Catfish i would use a live bait and make sure u fish on bottom.
