Welcome aboard "kath". Hope we can help you enjoy your time out doors.
Going to cover my thoughts on Possum Kingdom because they are few. Have never camped there but did take a look a few years ago. Even though there is nothing wrong with the park, we were not very impressed. Sites appear on the small side with little or no privacy. This is a very big issue for us. We just don't like to hemmed in. Park seems to have been designed with the many fisherman that frequent this lake in mind. If your not intending to spend the majority of your time fishing, I can't see the draw of this park. Mind you, we saw nothing really wrong. Just didn't fit our idea of camping.
Mineral Wells is one of the parks we frequent and enjoy. Sites are fairly well spaced out with trees and brush offering some seclution. One of the best features of the park is the fact that the camping area is on one side of the lake and the "Day Use" area is on the other. A very good arrangement as far as I'm concerned. There is extensive hiking in the park with some moderate challenges and you also have access to the Mineral Wells State Trailway off of the "Day Use" area. Also connected with the "Day Use" area is Penitentiary Hollow, an area were many enjoy rock climbing and repelling. At my age, that's a bit beyond me but I do enjoy watching and taking the stairs to the bottom of the hollow. The lake offers fair to good fishing for crappie and cats. Have had little luck with bass though I know others who have. Park Store leaves a lot to be desired but you'll find a Wal-Mart and other stores about 4 miles west of the park road entrance.
I really need to get a full review written on this park but it's one of those things that sits on the back burner and never seems to get done. Going to have to make sure that the next time we're at Mineral Wells I finish gathering all the needed information and get on with it. Until then, I guess this will have to do and I hope it's a help to you. Below is a site reference that should give a bit more info:
Mineral Wells State Park
Also, if I can answer any other questions, feel free to ask. Until then and always,
Happy Camping!
