Martin Creek State Park

Just curious if anyone has been to Martin Creek State Park. We are going there for Memorial Day weekend. We like trying new places as well as returning to some we have been to and really enjoyed. Let me know if you have been and what your thoughts are on it and after our trip I will post my review and my thoughts on it. Also, where is everyone else going for Memorial Day?

Re: Martin Creek State Park

Martin's Creek Lake SP is a typical East Texas park. It is very wooded. Campsites are pretty nice, but there are no full hook-ups. There are basic shelters for rent as well as 2 or 3 larger cabins. It is very popular with fishermen, especially in the winter because of the power plant. There is a nice beach area, so during warm weather it is popular with locals. I would expect a good crowd of day users when you plan to be there.

There are a few miles of hiking/biking trails to enjoy, and the park roads are a good place to ride bikes as well because this is not a really hilly area. There is primitive camping on the island. A foot bridge connects the mainland to the island near the boat ramp. This is rather unique.

It's really a nice park. The problem I have with it, though, is that the power plant always seems to pop up into view, and that somewhat destroys the "wilderness" illusion many of us try to create when going to parks.

Not too many places to eat in nearby Tatum. It's really just a crossroads sort of town. There is a new Bodacious BBQ on the north side heading to Longview, though.

I hope you enjoy your trip.

Re: Martin Creek State Park

Thanks for the response DayTripper. I think by looking at all the state parks that all seem to be already booked and it being a holiday weekend, everywhere is going to be crowed. Not only with campers but locals as well.
