Martin Creek Lake SP (Sept. 2009)

We spent two nights here after Labor day, so basically had the camp to ourselves, first its located on a Power Plant lake, second if you have a trailer its not friendly to back into sites, now that thats done, it still has alot to offer

Martin Creek Lake State Park,is located in Rusk County, southeast of Longview, Texas, the piney woods of east Texas.

Facilities include restrooms; hike-in primitive campsites with no drinking water available (one of the primitive areas is located on an island accessed via a bridge)(See pictures); campsites with water and electricity screened shelters; 2 cottages (converted screened shelters which have been air-conditioned and heated, both have water, electricity and bunk beds - and a capacity of 5; a 1.5-mile hiking trail; a 6-mile mountain bike trail; a 4-lane concrete boat ramp; a trailer dump station; a playground; and a lighted fishing pier. Two cabins accommodate 4; They have central air and heat, kitchen with 4-burner stove and oven, refrigerator, coffee maker, screened back porch, and outdoor smoker/cooker.

Did I mention its on a Power Plant Lake with a train that runs at 1130, 230 and 630, choo choo ....

So mixed review, nice park, move the plant and fix the entrances and its an excellent park

for a short view

Just curious as to the problem with the back in sites. Narrow? Not level? Roads too narrow for trailer and pull vehicle to get lined up properly? Have intended to visit that park but never had.

Thanks for posting the photo tours of all your visits, certainly helps put things in perspective

Re: Martin Creek Lake SP (Sept. 2009)

Rockhill,

The sites are similar to Cooper, South Sulpher unit.

Narrow roads to very narrow sites. There is only about 1 foot of extra room, side to side.

The problem I had is that I could not determine the site apron from the road or site drive. They are all gravel/blacktop. The angle is nearly a right angle from road to site so it requires a very tight turn but being unable to tell where I was within the apron was the main problem. I kept getting too tight and no room to pull forward enough to straighten. There was also a drop off on my blind side and my spotter was weary that I would "fall off" and we'd be in a bigger problem. I should have gone around and did the circle the other way so I backed to my driver side instead of passenger, that would probably had helped. I hope I explained it right!
The sites along the curve appeared easier to get into but they are 50 amp and I didn't know if they also had 30 amp service. If you are a confident backer you will probably be fine. I don't get enough practice with this long trailer!

If you go the waterfront sites get lights from off the plant to some extent at night

If you go that far east Atlanta is a much nicer park and had relatively inexpensive full hook up sites that were pull through. Also plan to post on Caddo Lake. It had some pull through also.

Your explanation made perfect sense to me. I have tried to back into some sites and really questioned the wisdom of the designer. Throw in darkness and maybe some extra vehicles parked nearby, can really get the blood pressure up on what is supposed to be a relaxing get away.
