Lost Maples SNA August 2009

Took a day visit out of San Antonio during a very dry period to Lost Maples.

Lost Maples State Natural Area is north of Vanderpool in Bandera County, west of San Antonio. The park has picnicking, camping, backpacking, hiking (11 miles or so of trails), photography, birdwatching, and nature study. The big draw is the Maples in the fall. They have lots and lots of parking. October/November are busy times here. Smaller park with 30 water/electric sites. Very dry right now. Not a destination park but interesting to see.

Were the creeks and river totally dry? I would guess that they were. I feel for you folks in SA and Austin for not only the heat but lack of rain. At least in the Houston area we've been getting some spotty showers cause by the stalled fronts interacting with the Gulf moisture.

According to the person at Lost Maples it lies near a spring, so it had some water in the river, not much but some was flowing
