Lost Maples

I've never been there this time of year, but have always heard the weekend crowds are a bit large. Anyone know about Friday days? We were thinking about heading out on Friday morning and spending the day there. My work schedule/pay schedule runs Wed. thru Tuesday, and being on commission, this makes a midweek jaunt a little difficult.

Re: Lost Maples

Fridays, especially in the mornings before folks get off work (some people get off work early on Fridays) would be good. Back when Justin and I were both off on Fridays from our respective corporate jobs, we'd head to high visitation parks and it was usually quiet and sane at even the busiest of parks (with the exception of Garner SP in the summer, of course. )

How'd your getaway go, roverchris? Were the colors showing much? LM is my all time favorite Hill Country destination. So very peaceful most of the time...

It was really nice. The drive from home was great as well. The trees were beginning to turn in spots but the cool weather hadn't really hit just yet. We took two pics and then our camera died. Some mechanism in the lens malfunctioned, so we were unable to take any photos. We drove back 187 to 39 to Kerrville. I don't think I saw one other vehicle on the road until Hunt. If I ever win the lottery, that's where I'm planting myself forever.

Thumbs up Re: Lost Maples

We plan to be there friday after Thanksgiving. Have done it for the past few years. Weather is beautiful around that time. We hike the trails and then we take a trip to Utopia for luch (Lost Maples Cafe). Best homemade hamburgers for sure. What a beautiful part of Hillcountry. We wish we could have bought some property few years ago. Now it is too expensive due to all the city people are moving out towards that area.

Re: Lost Maples

What's it like in the summer (crowd wise)? I was thinking of camping out there with the then 2 1/2 year old for a day or two. Can you take a dip in the river?

Re: Lost Maples

During the summer is kind of quiet. It is due to the heat. Though, there is alot of shade trees. The river is almost dry. Some areas you can get your feet wet just about.

Re: Lost Maples

What a day to enjoy Lost Maples. We arrived at the park about 10am today. The parking area at the office was full but when we got inside, we walked right up to the desk. Seems all those folks were using the restroom after a long drive out with full tanks of coffee. Since the line was long, we stopped at the campground. I have never seen it so full. There were about 5 empty sites but it seems they were reserved for arrivals for tonight.

We parked over to the left by the primitive camping parking. Headed up to the ponds. Watched some teens jump from the cliff a few times, tried to catch a few fish with a "survivorman style fishing rig". (Dental floss, hook, film canister for a bobber, and a walking stick for the pole.) My son caught 2 crickets for bait. They small fish enjoyed the crickets but he didn't actually catch any.

On the way back, we stopped at one of the creek crossings. I'd always noticed the clay along the bank and was just hankering to grab some and play. Sooooooooooooo, we did. A woman noticed what we were doing and she and the 2 kids she mentors stopped to play. She said they were starting to get bored of all the walking and looking at the pretty leaves. The kids played for about an hour with the clay. There were some fish in the creek there so I pulled out my fishing rig. As soon as the small, red, baitless, hook hit the water, FISH ON! That wouldn't happen again but it sure was funny. I gave the rig to the kids to keep since they were enjoying it. After all, I have plenty of floss, hooks, and canisters.

About 2 we grabbed the small cooler from the truck, walked across the parking lot and found a creek side spot for a picnic. After eating, we took our shoes off and played around in the water. We found many fossil clams along the banks and it the layers of sediment at the cliffs edge.

If you are going, park where we did. Everyone was at the other end of the park, near Maple trail. The colors aren't great this year so why give yourself the added parking headache by parking over there. We drove over just to check it out, whoa, all the spots were full, all the parallel parking along the road leaving the area were full, all the tables full, all the shade trees had a blanket or chairs underneath, and the ladies room had a line out the door ( as did the one at the office).

Still, it was a great way to spend the day, outside!
