Re: Lost Maples
What a day to enjoy Lost Maples. We arrived at the park about 10am today. The parking area at the office was full but when we got inside, we walked right up to the desk. Seems all those folks were using the restroom after a long drive out with full tanks of coffee. Since the line was long, we stopped at the campground. I have never seen it so full. There were about 5 empty sites but it seems they were reserved for arrivals for tonight.
We parked over to the left by the primitive camping parking. Headed up to the ponds. Watched some teens jump from the cliff a few times, tried to catch a few fish with a "survivorman style fishing rig". (Dental floss, hook, film canister for a bobber, and a walking stick for the pole.) My son caught 2 crickets for bait. They small fish enjoyed the crickets but he didn't actually catch any.
On the way back, we stopped at one of the creek crossings. I'd always noticed the clay along the bank and was just hankering to grab some and play. Sooooooooooooo, we did. A woman noticed what we were doing and she and the 2 kids she mentors stopped to play. She said they were starting to get bored of all the walking and looking at the pretty leaves. The kids played for about an hour with the clay. There were some fish in the creek there so I pulled out my fishing rig. As soon as the small, red, baitless, hook hit the water, FISH ON! That wouldn't happen again but it sure was funny. I gave the rig to the kids to keep since they were enjoying it. After all, I have plenty of floss, hooks, and canisters.
About 2 we grabbed the small cooler from the truck, walked across the parking lot and found a creek side spot for a picnic. After eating, we took our shoes off and played around in the water. We found many fossil clams along the banks and it the layers of sediment at the cliffs edge.
If you are going, park where we did. Everyone was at the other end of the park, near Maple trail. The colors aren't great this year so why give yourself the added parking headache by parking over there. We drove over just to check it out, whoa, all the spots were full, all the parallel parking along the road leaving the area were full, all the tables full, all the shade trees had a blanket or chairs underneath, and the ladies room had a line out the door ( as did the one at the office).
Still, it was a great way to spend the day, outside!
