This weekend I added two former State Parks to my been there done that list. Tips Park in Three rivers and Ft. Lipantitlan SHS
We took in the tiny Tips Park on Friday on the way to Harlingen.
Yesterday as we were returning home to San Marcos from a 4th weekend in the valley and we decided to take the detour to Ft. Lipantitlan.
Just finding the place was a challenge, no signage anywhere to help you locate it down at the end of CR 58 off of FM70 (head down the small road next to the historical marker). Once we arrived we found another stone marker and a small fenced orchard of large Mesquites. Were that all it might be a nice place to bird or picnic or just walk around and collect ticks. But it wasn't all. There were several gates opening out of the SHS (which apparently is just a large driveway for several "residences"). These residences were of the trailer, yard full of junk cars and pit bulls and shot up targets variety. The place is extremely remote and there was an extremely "meth lab, chainsaw massacre" vibe to the place. We drove in, saw the lay of the land, and then got out of there.
TPWD should remove this one from the maps. I have sought out some Texas fort locations way down some fairly remote gravel only to find myself stopped by deadends and barbed wire and no trespassing signs, but this is by far the creepiest place I have been and definitely made me feel uncomfortable.
