You can call a park directly within 48 hours of your arrival if you haven't been able to secure anything. Have you tried Martin Dies, Jr. State Park? They have over 150 sites and the park is only about two hours from Houston.
Are there any tips/tricks to securing last minute reservations? We bought a pop up this past weekend and would love to try it out. However most of the near by state parks are booked. I know they'll probably have availability, but we're trying to get in on Friday and can't risk just 'showing up.'
Is there a time/day that works better than others on Reserve America when cancels ressies might become available?
Thanks!
Mark

It isn't a state park but Double Lakes Recreation Area in the Sam Houston National Forest is one of our favorite places close to home to camp. I am just slightly north of Houston and it takes me an hour to drive. There is a very small lake with a swim area and boat rental as well as hiking trails and a paved walking loop around the lake. We never make reservations and we always get in.
Call directly: Brazos Bend SP, Huntsville SP, Galveston Island SP, Buescher/Bastrop SP's. Cagle Recreation area is by Lake Conroe.
Crockett Family Resort is not too far. I've camped at the all with my Pup.
Oh, I forgot Spring Creek Park in Tomball. It's free w/full hookups! Go to: Precinct 4 Parks
