Lake Mineral Wells State Trailway

Hello All,

I'm considering a hike along the Lake Mineral Wells State Trailway, a 20 mile route which runs along an old railway grade between Mineral Wells and Weatherford. I'm not familiar with this hike at all other than the little bit of information I have found on the TPW site. I've also viewed a topo and a satellite map. I'm really interested in hearing the impressions of anyone who has hiked part or all of this trail.

Thanks in advance for any information.
Tripper

Cool Re: Lake Mineral Wells State Trailway

It's a really nice trail between Weatherford and Garner, where it runs through the countryside. From Garner to Mineral Wells it runs beside roads. I've hiked it a few times but prefer biking it. There is running water at both ends, at Garner, and at Lake Mineral Wells State Park. They turn it off sometime in the winter, but it's probably still on. There's a gas station in Garner that's a popular local lunch destination. The trail has always been quiet and I've seen quite a bit of wildlife.

The Weatherford trailhead is a little hard to find, but they'll give good directions if you call the park. The parking lot in Weatherford gets locked at dark, so if you think you may be late, park in Garner where they can't lock you up.

Lake Mineral Wells State Park is a better walk in the woods and stickers will eat your bike tires. There's a lot to explore in the backcountry, and you can backpack and hike at night. Tons of wildlife there.
