The trail stays relatively close to the lake. There is a good spot to swim once you get around to the dam area - they even have a picnic table and a trash can there. You can't miss that spot either, it is fairly open and obvious. The water is typical to East Texas, very brown/copper looking from all the sand and minerals in the location, but I grew swimming in this area - so it does have some side effects - just kidding! It'll do fine to beat the heat.
There is an amazing stand of Dogwood along this trail, as well as a very old stand of American Holly that I find very impressive every time I hike there.
