Halloween Camping @ Lake Somerville

We left Saturday AM & got there (Birch Creek Unit) about noon. I've never camped there -- we used to party there a lot while I was @ A&M though. Good times! LOL.

Pretty park -- we had site #28. Not lakeside but you could see the lake. The weather was beautiful! We got set up, ate lunch, did a brief hike/bike on the lake, and then went to College Station to visit with my daughter & take her some stuff. Stayed until about 5PM then headed back to Somerville.

BIG MISTAKE!! The game had JUST gotten out & it rivaled the BIGGEST traffic jam I've seen in Houston!! We were stuck quite a while trying to escape!

Well, we finally got back about 6:30, made dinner and then we went to the place they were having the 'Haunted Hike". The Rangers took us on a hayride to the beginning of the 'hike'. They had set up a nice little scary path through the woods, with plenty of volunteers in costumes to scare us. They had renamed the little pond we passed "Crystal Lake" and Jason emerged in all his dripping glory. There were also zombies, vampires, a thing under the wooden bridge that tried to grab your ankles, etc. It was only about 30 minutes long, but it was worth it!

Then we went back to the camper & had a fire, roasted marshmallows, etc. Was plenty cold and we used our sweatshirts. The night was beautiful & we did lots of stargazing. Had hot chocolate and headed off to bed.

Woke up Sunday at daybreak to shotgun fire as the hunters tried to get their quota of ducks. That went on for about an hour. We managed to go back to sleep for awhile. Gradually we got moving (after Mom had her coffee), after breakfast took a bike ride around to see some of the other camping loops, then started packing up to leave.

Lake Somerville is a nice clean park with friendly staff. We will be back again sometime!

Looks like a nice state park! On their website it says that duck hunters could launch their boats around 3am! Eeek! Can't imagine waking up to the gunfire.

the 'Haunted Hike" is a cool idea! Sounds like a great trip--minus the shotgun blasts in the morning...

Thanks for the report ! That is one of those parks we want to check out, did you notice if there were a number of tents or trailers? and is it level?

Any pictures?

No pictures -- I forgot my camera.

If the site I was on was any indication -- some are not that llevel!! We used 3 Lynx blocks under one tire and the tongue was about a foot off the ground!

More tents than trailers -- some sites had 2-3 tents on them. The picnic table area was roofed or had a trellis-like thing with vines on it.

Watch out for the sticker burrs. They are WICKED!!
