Smile Government Canyon SNA (August 2009)

New Rule one; don't hike in August in Texas in the late morning during a drought !

Government Canyon is real close to West San Antonio, (just outside 1604)
The Area is still being developed. Some facilities and trails are under construction. The Natural Area Headquarters Visitor Center has an exhibit hall and a Texas State Park Store. Other facilities include a group picnic pavilion with 10 picnic sites.Open Friday-Monday and closed Tuesday-Thrusday.

Trails looked great but by mid morning we gave up, it was way too hot.

For a short view,

Re: Government Canyon SNA (August 2009)

Thanks for the posting.

My son and I are usually at Government Canyon about twice a month. You are right -- it can get very hot in that park for some reason. We usually try to get on the trail by about 7AM or so (right after the gates open) to avoid the heat and are back home by 11AM at the latest.

There are many, many good trails out there and it is so nice to have it right in San Antonio's back yard.
