Thumbs up Glacier National Park Day 5 (July 2009)

We headed out of the Many Glacier area saying we have to get back here, but it was time to head west on the going to the Sun Road. Slept in for a late breakfast at the Park Cafe, great breakfast and got PIE to go (have a cooler to put it in !)

Stopped to take the short hike to Baring Falls, real nice trail, saw deer and had a trail hike.Headed west to Logans Point, if weather permitted had hoped to hit the hidden lake trail and get higher this time, there was some sun but quickly clouded up as we got there, still made the lake overlook and saw some Big Horn sheep along the way. Its hard to film and walk fast up or downhill but filmed instead of taking picture's, made it back before a nice downpour came in.
Next stop was Avalanche Falls, clouds had gone away and it was warm, took the hike to the lake. its UPHILL most of the way but a good hike, after watching some kids make noise across the lake, we saw ,less than 5 minutes later, a black bear, eerie. Thats as close as I want to get thank you

Saw a deer on the way back (after the bear at the lake we thought he might wander up the trail)

Ended the day at Apgar on the west side and the motor inn, what a view of Lake McDonald
Slideshow of pictures, photos, and videos, from webshots

Re: Glacier National Park Day 5 (July 2009)

Thanks for posting the beautiful photos and trip report, Troop. I know everyone enjoyed them. The only time we were at this park was just a brief visit as we were going to Waterton and points north in Canada. Wish I could have spent more time there. The only hike we had time for was the Avalanche Lake hike. We had bear bells on our hiking staffs but didn't see any bears. You got lucky.

Next time you go back you ought to backpack to one of the Chalets. That would be cool.

Re: Glacier National Park Day 5 (July 2009)

The bear bells thing was kind of funny, most of the folks who actually had bells were not very loud, IMHO a waste of money.
Favorite Glacier joke:
How can you tell a bear is full? Look for the bells laying around its feet! kidding bear attacks are rare.
Seriously, bear spray (we did not feel the need to get) is a much better thing to carry than bells. Been to four parks now with bears and this was the closest while hiking we have seen and it bothered no one.

The grizz mentioned in another post were much further away from everything.
