Nice report. How much is a cabin these days and can you cook inside?
Stayed in a cabin at Garner on Wednesday night. We had fun (trying to) build a fire for smores. Tips: bring a fitted sheet for the beds (full size beds in the cabin we had) and sleep on top in your sleeping bag (don't slide around so much with the sheet on the mattress. Also bring paper towels. Toilet paper is provided but not paper towels. We hiked up the hill next to the cabin. It was quite steep and I am out of shape. But there was a beautiful view at the top. Coming down took no time at all. The river is beautiful and clear - we waded around the following day. There aren't very many restaurants in the area this time of year. In Leakey the only place that looked open was the Frio Canyon Lodge restaurant. It turned out to be very good, and had a great ambience. The service was leisurely, but then so were we. The place closed at 8 p.m. Wednesday night, and you have to consider that during the off-season. There is no McDonald's or other late-night options anywhere near the state park!

I have discovered the best fire starters lately; "fritos". I get a piece of paper and wad it up under the fire wood, add a couple of "fritos" on in between the paper and wood and just light it up. You do not get any chemical taste. It really works wonders. If no fritos laying around, I use cooking oil as a starter. It also works wonders.

Hey Troop198,
The cabins are great although aged. The kitchen is good in them also. Clean bathrooms generally. Usually one bed in the living area and two more on the screened porch area. Almost every one has good shade and good yard areas. We don;t stay in them any longer because of the two yorkies that we always take with us, NO pets in the buildings, be it a shelter or cabin. Garner is much stricter with that rule than some other state parks. I do miss the cabins though, you could hear the music from the pavilion sometimes.
Troop 198, sorry for the delay in replying. The price they quoted us was $75 plus tax. The cabin had three full-size beds and was listed as maximum occupancy 6 people. Two of the beds are in a separate bedroom, one is in the "living room" which also has a dining table with six chairs and the fireplace. The kitchen had a full-size fridge and a range with oven. There was no microwave.
