Frio / Concan Rivers -- Time of Year?

We've never really been out towards Garner; though we did a day trip through Lost Maples 2 years ago. I'd like to explore the river areas and maybe do some tubing.

Is there a time of year after summer when the crowds die down a bit but the weather and temps still cooperate for that?

Any good recommendations to see the area, tubing, etc? We could camp at Garner or anywhere somewhat nearby.

Any info for these newbies would be appreciated!

Thanks

Mark

Re: Frio / Concan Rivers -- Time of Year?

The crowds start dying down in August, specifically when everyone starts going back to school.. Well, to make it easier on you.. After The Labor Day Holiday (the last big bang of the summer so to say).

The Frio Canyon peaks in the summer and that's people and temperature wise.. I personally think the fall is a great time to come down because it is cooler and the crowds are slimmer. I'm not sure of the exact dates that the temperatures starting averaging in the 80's or down into the 70's since we all know how Texas weather can be a fickle creature, but I think you are "at least" still safe into October. Yet, i've even experienced weather good for tubing in december.. Exploring wise.. i prefer it is cooler or even cold..

There is a lot of things to do here.. a lot of people do explore Garner State Park's trails, climb "Old Baldy" and have even read (on this very forum) about a Cave which I would like to check out myself.. I'd have to look up to refer you to the thread..

The Frio's water temperature is cold year around "Frio River= Cold River" and fed by cold springs so it's more of what you can handle with outside temperatures..

Most people just enjoy the surroundings.. But as far as exploring- the only place you can explore to an extended degree is Garner- because anywhere else that's not a public river crossing is pretty much private land.

Well, as always- you can always message me and check out a site that we specifically run for the Frio Canyon Welcome to funrivers.com! Your Link to The Frio River Canyon
