Was at the park Sat. 4-20. Unfortunately we did not make reservations and were unable to camp. We had a wonderful day any way. The park has a couple of bird/wildlife observation blinds. The one behind HQ is very nice. It has several feeding stations and a bird bath w/mister. Saw a painted bunting for the first time taking a bath. What a beautiful little bird!! Also got a close look at a male turkey with the sun shining on him. Very pretty also. Many other birds, as well as lizards, rabbit, turkey and deer were seen. The park also has a section of river suitable for tubing. I highly recommend a visit.

Thumbs up Re: Discuss: South Llano River State Park

stumbled onto this park summer 2002 when all the other river parks were closed because of the flooding. it was our first big camping trip. we stayed 9 days because it was just the perfect place, in mho. since we were there during the week, we had lots of quite and solitude. oh, there were a few grandparents with the grand kids, but for the most part, we almost had the place to our selves. we stayed on the river most of the day except the hottest part. my two kids spent time with each other and became friends, and i just relaxed and renewed my mind, spirit and body. we were hooked.

the facilities are great, clean showers and grounds. great park rangers too. the bird viewing areas are good and easy to get to. pleny of tubes for rent if you did not bring your own. great slow lazy float with not dangerous spots. great for families with small ones. short hike from the camp to the spillway/tube put in. kids love the spillway. they will play all day.

we went back three years in a row, but now it is getting popular and not as quite or as easy to get a spot. still like it, but now my kids are teens and we are ready for more adventurous parks.

lots of wildlife and pretty views right in the camp area. ten minutes from town with everything you could need and several good eating places.

make reservations way ahead. happy trails.

new camping addict.
