We recently camped at Kerrville-Shriner. I would not recommend camping on the same side of the highway as the park headquarters (with the river and playground). The noise from the highway is very loud and unsettling. We switched to the other side of the highway after the first night and found that campground very pleasent.

We found the same thing. The area on the same side as park headquarters was very nice, but it was disappointing to be able to hear trucks and cars on the freeway in the evening and during the night.

Have looked at this park and found the same thing. The side you register on (I believe it would be the north side of the highway) was much too busy and loud. Park seems very "open" and sites are too close together for our likng. I understand that the south side is much better but I have not had a look at it yet.

Thumbs down Kerrville-Shcreiner

On the other side, hand, we stayed on the other side, and our kids were disappointed to be so far from the river and playground that they couldnt visit often. It was quiet and peaceful, as you all mentioned, and the deer strolled by regularly, but young kids in strollers wanted to be closer to their own fun.

Guess that's why there are two sides. Will have to get back there and have a look at the other side of the road.

Kerrville-Schreiner State Park

We spent Easter weekend at this lovely park this year and had a wonderful time. My daughter was riding in the Hill Country Classic and my other daughter, little grandson, and myself enjoyed exploring the park while we waited for her to finish her ride. We didn't have a reservation and the park was full of riders when we arrived; so we were sent to what was referred to as "the overflow area". We had a nice, clean spot to pitch our tents in the green grass and several trees for shade. Much to my surprise, it was actually quite a bit nicer, I thought, than the regular campground (except for the cabin area along the river where I'd love to stay next time!). We were situated in a peaceful and pretty site, which seemed close to the highway (over the hill) but it was incredibly quiet.. considering that every camp site was occupied (most of them by family groups). Everyone seemed to be courteous and considerate of other campers. There were lots of children, too. This pleased my little grandson. We were just a short walk from the playground and the butterfly garden. We were also close enough to the river to hike down a trail to the water where we found some clean picnic tables, more trees, and more green grass to stretch out on while my grandson played in the shallow waters by a clean (but rocky) little beach. Several people were fishing the Guadalupe; but I didn't see them catch anything. Only drawback: it was a long, long walk to the restrooms and showers from our campsite. We usually just drove there in the car. It would have been perfect if they had placed another facility at this end of the park. All in all, it was one of the lovliest Easter weekends I have ever experienced. I look forward to going back there again some day.

Re: Discuss: Kerrville-Schreiner State Park

Just got back from a weekend at Kerrville-Schreiner and I must say that things have not changed much since the previous posters comments...

We had reserved a spot on the 'Riverside' of the park since we had planned on doing a bit of fishing and since it was close to the playground but when we got there and saw the water-only tent spots we quickly asked to look at the 'Hillside' campgrounds instead. The sites on the 'Riverside' were small, close together, and barely had any shade at all. They afforded very little privacy at all (in fact to be honest, none!). The only benefit we could see was that it was just a short stroll to a nice fishing dock/area that actually did have shade.
Oh and there were nearby bathrooms/showers (that were unfortunately closed for remodeling).

The 'Hillside' was MUCH better. We stayed in spot #57 which had plenty of shade and kept us well seperated from our neighbors. Short walk to clean restrooms/showers and water. Our site had a picnic table and a firering with grill. The only iffy thing about this site was that it appears to possibly have some run-off when it rains (evidence in the dirt since we just had rain the couple days before).

The park seemed pretty quiet, there were probably about 10 of the campsites around us occupied. Everyone was very friendly and quite a few families were around. My 6 year old daughter was thrilled when we went down to the fishing pier for the second time of the day and there was another family down there fishing as well. The kids had fun catching perch, crappie, and a little sunfish. (As a side note the father had caught a 3.5 lb bass the evening before, with a plastic frog, so there are bigger fish to be caught out there.)

The hiking trails are also nicely maintained. We picked up 2 or 3 pieces of trash on our little hike but that was about all we saw. Some of the trails had more shade than others but for the most part it was a nice walk with some minor changes in evelation. And with being so close to the road you don't really have to worry about getting lost.

Over-all while this is a small park and we weren't thrilled with being so far from the river it was worth it for a weekend trip, we would probably visit again.

Sorry for being so verbose but I hope that this review helps...

thanks!

Re: Discuss: Kerrville-Schreiner State Park

Just got back from this park yesterday. Will be posting a full review over the next few weeks. There have been a lot of improvements since the city took the park back. Will outline them fully in my review. We have added this park to our "Top 5" list and will be using it as "home" whenever we wish to be at the southern end of the Hill Country.

Happy Camping!
