Goliad State Historical Park - Nov 4-6, 2006

This is our first time camping here at Goliad State Park. It has a very nice trailer loop with full hookups and pull through sites. The sites all have lots of nice trees and the loop is surrounded by a thick forest. Apparently this is just not that popular of a park, and so there is plenty of availability on the weekends, something that is not common in Texas State Parks!

The park is right next to US183, so the road noise is quite noticeable, although it seems to quiet down overnight. The road noise might bother some people. If you are tent camping, you will be further away from the highway and next to the river. The road noise is much less noticeable there.

We're along the San Antonio River. The Mission Santo Espiritu and Fort Presidio La Bahia are right here, so history buffs will enjoy the restored buildings and the museums. Most of the restoration work was done by the CCC.

We enjoyed hiking the river trail. Saw Winter Wrens, Carolina Wrens, and House Wrens all together! It was our first sighting of Winter Wrens in Texas. They have the "Aranama Trail" which is a guided nature trail with handbook explaining many of the plants. We've been hearing Barred Owls and we flushed a Red-shouldered Hawk at the Aranama Trail.

We'll be back because of nice facilities, camp site availability, and handy location.

Oh Gosh! - and I thought my (long) post had been lost! It turns out that somehow I hadn't been logged in when I posted. So the previous "Unregistered guest" is actually me FWIW.

Re: Discuss: Goliad State Historical Park

Goliad State Park is a real jewel in the state park system. Great for camping, whether it be tent, RV, or in one of the cabins. We stayed there many times when the kids were small. Lots of history in that area. There is a nice nature trail in the park.

And, they now have a trail called the Angel of Goliad Trail that goes from near the Courthouse Square, past Goliad State Park, across the San Antonio River and on to Presidio La Bahia and the Fannin Monument. We walked that trail a month ago and had a great time.

If you time your visit to coincide during the first Saturday of each month, you can catch their market days around the courthouse square.

Re: Discuss: Goliad State Historical Park

We just went to Goliad State Park about 3 weeks ago and had a GREAT time.

I would recommend this park to anyone who likes hiking, biking, nature trails, history, ect.

The RV sites are spaced far apart, and each site has ALOT of area. All sites in the RV area have full hook-ups, picnic table, fire ring, and grill. There is only one Restroom / Shower building in the RV camping area. There are two sides (Male & Female) with each side having 2 showers, sink and a few toilet stalls. Even though there was only one bath house, we never had a line to use the showers ect. However we were there in Oct which is "off season", in the summer it may be a different story although if that was the case then we could always just shower in our RV.

The camp store sells small bundles of firewood for $5 as gathering your own firewood is prohibited.

Here is a little slide show of our trip there. (Give it a minute or two to start when you click on the link)

BTW - We only have two kids, all those other kids in the pics were children that our kids made friends with from the other sites.

We will definately be going back again, and luckily for us it's only just about 1hr away from us.
