Cool News Release

For Immediate Release
March 25, 2002

Reserve a Group Site for Your Next Gathering at Calaveras Park or Braunig Park

SAN ANTONIO. Tired of hosting your family events at the same places every year? Calaveras Park and Braunig Park have the solution to your problem. Both parks now accept reservations on group sites accommodating up to 75 people.

Calaveras Park Group Sites: Calaveras Cove and Lake View
Calaveras Park offers two group reservation sites: Calaveras Cove and Lake View. Calaveras Cove has seating for approximately 75 people and is equipped with barbeque pits, a volleyball net, and a campfire ring. Calaveras Cove is located on the shores of Calaveras Lake, with more than 75 feet of direct waterfront access.

If your outdoor needs include electrical hookup, Lake View is right for you. Lake View has seating for approximately 75 people and comes equipped with barbeque pits, a campfire ring, and electricity. Shade trees and a nice lake breeze make both Calaveras Cove and Lake View ideal summer spots. Tent camping is permitted at both sites.

Braunig Park Group Sites: The Pavilion, Lakeside, and Big Oak
Braunig Park offers three group reservation sites to meet your planning needs: The Pavilion, Lakeside and Big Oak.

Concerned it may rain? The Pavilion is a covered site that seats approximately 75 people and is equipped with electricity, three barbeque pits, and an adjacent swing set. With the tables removed, it serves as a 22' x 30' covered dance floor. Camping is not permitted.

Like Lake View at Calaveras Park, the Lakeside group at Braunig offers more than 75 feet of direct waterfront access. The area seats approximately 50 people and is equipped with three barbeque pits and a campfire ring. Tent camping is permitted.

If you prefer an “inland” shaded area, Big Oak is the spot for your next gathering. With seating for approximately 75 people, Big Oak offers barbeque pits and a campfire ring. Tent camping is permitted.

Reservations are accepted in advance with payment of a $25 deposit. Reservations made for holidays and during the San Antonio area spring break week will require a two-day minimum rental and a deposit in the amount of 100% of the rental fee.
For more information on fees and availability, contact the park of your choice:

Braunig Park: (210) 635-8289 or braunigpark@sara-tx.org

Re: Discuss: Calaveras Lake Park

This is a nice place to visit for the day, particularly if you like to bank fish, or boat fish. The lake is stocked with Red Drum ( typically a saltwater fish which thrives here) I have personally caught 10+ 20"-33 1/2" reds from the bank.

The lake is not a swimming lake. Don't take the kids thinking they will play in the water. The water was impounded to serve as a cooling lake for the coal fired power plant. Braunig lake is the same thing but smaller.

The restrooms get pretty yucky on weekends. Keep that in mind if you are staying overnight. I still enjoy going there. I just went there after work tonight with some friends and caught a catfish.

Re: Discuss: Calaveras Lake Park

Any wildflowers out there? I suspect not, given the low wildflower turnout elsewhere, but I remeber walking among a lovely field of Indian paintbrush one spring not too many years ago. The lake looks lovely from the air (Justin and I flew over it last Sunday during a quick flight), but we haven't visited the lake in too long. We'll have to get back out there soon. We've had some great birdwatching at both Braunig & Calaveras Lakes, and it's just nice to sit on the shoreline and relax for awhile.

Re: Discuss: Calaveras Lake Park

Since the lake is a power plant lake there is good fishing there year round, as has been posted before there is no swimming. The fishing is always decent, but it's not uncommon for us (3-4people) to come back with 30+ lbs of fish fillets after about 6-8 hours on the water. Typically we fish on a boat but you can do some good without. Also, REPORT YOUR FISH AS YOU LEAVE!!! They stock the lake based on the numbers they get from the fishermen / women. If you fail to tell them how many you catch it only hurts all of us in the long run.

Re: Discuss: Calaveras Lake Park

Corrected the hours on our Calaveras Lake Park page, although our original data came direct from the park superindentant/manager. We hadn't been informed of any changes.

Thumbs down Re: Discuss: Calaveras Lake Park

This park is not what it seemed,My Family and I visited Calaveras park on June 6-7 2006 and The park charged us for both our 10 year old and 0ur 8 year old the only free was our 5 year old.Not only that but the concession stand is not open til 11PM as stated by their site!!! It closes at 10pm SHARP!
The park is full of litter and dead fish carcasses,it was not a PLEASANT visit at all in fact we were so dismayed by the park that we left half way through our camping trip to this park! The smell of the area we camped at was so overwhelming that members of my famliy began to feel ill!Do yourself a favor and find a better place to go!

I live in Lake Whitney Tx and NO WHERE on this lake is any of it's parks this deplorable! This was my first and will be my LAST visit to this park!!

Re: Discuss: Calaveras Lake Park

I see it mentioned that this is not a swimming lake. Does that also mean you can't water ski on this or Braunig lake either?

Thanks,

Re: Discuss: Calaveras Lake Park

Okay, I keep editing the hours for various reported inaccuracies, but so far the hours posted here on Wild Texas (we don't own or maintain the park, nor are we affiliated with any park agency in Texas) keep getting cited as inaccurate. When in doubt, folks, CALL THE PARK.

We do our best. We're only as accurate as the folks who visit parks more regularly than us, and the park maintainers who do contact us when they note discrepancies.

Folks need to complain to the park maintainer and not just us when they have a bad experience at a park, by the way, such as the unregistered user who posted on June 9th.

Both Braunig & Calaveras Lake Parks are maintained by the San Antonio River Authority.

Angry Re: Discuss: Calaveras Lake Park

I went to this park thinking it was like most Texas parks I had been to, clean, neat and beautiful. I was highly mistaken. First there is no swiming anywhere, not that I would want to swim in this water. You could not see the bottom anywhere even at the 3 inch level. Second there was posted signs for not littering, it was completely ignored by pretty much everyone. There is broken glass bottles all over the grassy areas. Trash is everywhere except in the trash bins. There was a cleaned and gutted fish laying in one of the so called shaded picinic areas. There is also a dead fish or two floating around in the water where my family and I stopped to check out this scenic area. What does the entry fee go to? Obviously it does not go to maintence of this park. I hope someone who reads this takes action to clean up what could be a very nice facility but until then I will not return to this so called park. It looks like spring break happened here and no one cleaned it up.
I also want to say that the gentleman who was in the booth when we got there really had no people skills. He was very lack luster in his approach to customer service. He did however express intrest into which website had told us that there was swimming there and said he would try to correct the problem. He should get a pat on the back for it.
All in all I would say what a disappointment this lake was for my whole family. I will continue to use Texas' great park system, just not this one. I highly suggest you do the same.

Re: Discuss: Calaveras Lake Park

Please complain to the park. WildTexas.com has no affiliation to any Texas park and the park you're referring to is not a Texas State Park it is operated, as I've mentioned before, by the San Antonio River Authority. They need to hear your complaints, as they are the only people who can act on them to redress the situation.
