We just got back from Bastrop SP. This was our first visit to a state park in almost 8 years. We had stopped going to state parks for a variety of reasons, including filthy restrooms and lack of patrols by park employees.

We were impressed with Bastrop SP. The facilties were well maintained, the bathrooms were just about spotless, and park employees made regular rounds throught the park. Park employees were very friendly.

We stayed in the walk-in tent area, which is on the "red" trail. The red trail ends in an RV camping area(complete with restrooms/showers), and the walk-in tent area is near the end of the trail. It took us longer to drive to the restrooms than it did to walk to them from the campsite.

Each of the walk-in sites had a picnic table, fire ring, pole to hang a lantern on, and waist-high BBQ grill. Most of the sites also had a water spigot at the site.

We are originally from East Texas, and Bastrop SP reminded us of home. We didn't want to leave, but once again, work gets in the way of fun.

The park also has a golf course and swimming pool.

Bastrop itself has really grown. There is a Wal-Mart, HEB grocery, and just about every kind of restaurant you can imagine within a few minutes of the park.

We'll go back to Bastrop SP again, but we'll take the camper this time. Every so often we drag out the tent to remind ourselves that we're too old to be sleeping on the ground.

4runner,

Thanks for the review on Bastrop. That's one of the parks we have not been to as yet but have been thinking about.

Kind of surprised that you haven't been to Texas SP's in so long. That's just about all we ever stay at and have rarely had any of the problems you site. About the only park I've been to and would not recommend or return to is Fairfield. Didn't care for that one for a number of reasons.

BTW: Have I seen your screen name on other message boards?

I know that the Lost Pines trail is a loop about 8 and a half miles long. Is there also a trail that goes to Buescher State Park from Bastrop State Park? Years ago I'd heard that they were going to construct one.

There's no traditional hiking trail that links the two parks, but there is a 12 mile paved roadway linking them. TPWD recommends only serious bicyclists use the roadway, probably because you're sharing it with vehicles and some sections are hilly.

I've never rode it, myself. Driven it plenty of times when we're out in that neck o' the woods.

Re: Discuss: Bastrop State Park

I just created a page of pictures (see link at bottom) from our trip last year to Bastrop State Park. It's a good park and we will definately go back. It is a little confusing that there are two separate parks right next to each other (Bastop and Buescher). We have not been to Buescher yet.
