Dinosaur Valley State Park June 2006
This was our first long camping trip and we were excited. DV quickly fills and our reservations were made months ago. We arrived shortly after noon, making quick time traveling straight up 281 from San Antonio. We passed 100+ bikers on their way to Hico from Austin.
After scouting out a site, we made camp and tarped over the tent and table, just in case. It had sprinked and rained all the way up there. It was hot hazy and humid, and it only got worse after the sprinkle about 6pm. That's ok, we still enjoyed wading in the river, following the dinosaur tracks in the Paluxy, from the "Blue Hole" at track site #1, over to track site #2. The hikes to the sites were fairly short and easy walks. The statues in front of the park store got lots of attention, an Apatosaurus (brontosaurus), and T rex. They are very life-like and well maintained. You'd never know they are from 1964. The store was small but had loads of educational stuff, and ice cream too. If you need anything about Dinosaurs, or are a teacher, you should check out this store. I didn't notice if they had food (other than snacks) , or propane in there, don't think so.
We cleaned up, and after supper, had some VIP guests arrive for a few hours to discuss camping, and the meaning of life over some dessert. The next day, we sought out the local swimming hole. The "Blue Hole" at DV didn't look that appealing to us so following a suggestion from a friend, we found "Big Rocks" Park. As you leave DV, instead of turning onto 67, go straight thru town. Once you've gone thru downtown, its on the right. We swam all darn day and had a blast.
IMO, DV is a one-day park. Once you've seen it, there wasn't much more. We probably could have hiked but it was just to hot.
On the day we left, we stopped at "Debbie's" restraunt for breakfast buffet. Nice local place. Again, it was taking a suggestion from a friend that we ate there, thanks TK.
