day parks at Canyon lake.... and Avalon state park at Medina Lake?
Firstly, I was wondering if anyone has any opinions on the day parks at Canyon Lake? I am thinking maybe heading to Comal Park, Overlook Park, etc. Has anyone been to these parks and if so, what's your opinions on it?
Also, I was looking at a map and I saw Medina Lake (and Avalon State Park?), but I can't really find information about it anywhere. Anyone have information about this area?

What activities are you interested in @ Canyon? We've only really fished up there ( not having much luck from the bank), at Rebecca Creek and Crane's Mill. We have launched the father in laws boat from the Randolph Air force marina. Their facility was nice as I remember. If it's fishing information you are seeking, the man who owns Fisherman's Corner at Canyon Lake has the lead on guides, water levels etc. Hope this is helpful.

Re: day parks at Canyon lake.... and Avalon state park at Medina Lake?
We have been to C.L. a couple of times with my brother's boat. We didn't spend any time at the parks per se as we went to a large island in the lake with lots of rock cliffs. There's a sandy beach on the ummmmm, I *think* south side where we pulled up & tied off. We set up a screen shelter & spent the day on the island (the only folks there--LOL!) That's where my son first discovered his love of jumping off things into the water!!
It would have been wonderful to have had a tent & camped there -- I don't know if it's allowed or not, but no one came to tell us to get off!

I am not sure yet, I am thinking mostly swimming, picnicking, and the trails for now. I just wanted to know if it's a nice place and if it has nice scenery and such.

I'm not quite sure what I plan to do, but I think we're probably most interested in swimming, picnicking, and trails. I am most interested in how the parks are, like are they nice, nice scenery, clean, quiet, etc.

Re: day parks at Canyon lake.... and Avalon state park at Medina Lake?
You might try picnicing at the park located at Canyon Lake Dam. I can't recall if there are picnic tables but there is a restroom. You can stroll across the top of the dam, view the spillway which was decimated during the floods a few years ago, and drive downstream to see just how severe flood damage was to the area below the spillway. Just below the dam is the "Tailrace", the start of the Guadalupe river. If you like rainbow trout, they stock it there in the winter. Most likely there are no trout in that spot now, they move down stream near "Whitewater Sports". You might wade in the river there, the water is very cold ( from the depths of the lake) and it's usually swift there. Try renting tubes further downstream at "Whitewater".

The trail I have hiked at Canyon lake is listed on Austin Explorer.
http://austinexplorer.com/hiking/Hik...asp?HikeID=351
It's called the Old Hancock trail. Its basically a shoreline hike between the houses and the lake. I found the trail to be very predicatable and frankly boring. It offered some good excercise but not much else.

I have been to most of the parks on Canyon Lake. They are all nice and have restrooms, boat ramps, and some have swimming beaches (great with kids).
Here is a map that you can click and get more information

This is my third try:

I like Canyon Park. If you camp, pay to camp at one of the developed parks. Safety first.
As far as Medina Lake, it is way down and I do not know if Avalon Park would be a good place to go.
